5. EPIDEMIOLOGleAL STUDIES OF eANeER lN HUMANS

چکیده
As early as 1910, it was observed in Paris, France, that about 80% of patients with cancer of the oesophagus and cardiac region of the stomach were alcoholics, who drank mainly absinthe (Lamy, 1910). ln the first half of this century, it was also noted from mortality statistics in various countries that high risks for cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus and larynx occurred among persons employed in the production and distribution of alcoholIc beverages (Young & RusselI, 1926; Clemmesen, 1941; Kennaway & Kennaway, 1947; Versluys, 1949). Later studies showed that cancers at these sites occur at lower rates of incidence (and mortality) in religious groups that proscribe alcohol intake, such as Seventh-day Adventists (Wynder et aL., 1959; Lemon et al., 1964; Philips et al., 1980), compared with corresponding national populations. Although many aspects of the life style of such populations are particular, differences in drinking (and smoking) habits may contribute to the differences in disease rates. Subsequent to these historical observations and studies of religious groups, analytical studies of the cohort and casecontrol type have been carried out.

Serum alpha–actinin antibody status in systemic lupus erythematosus and its potential in the diagnosis of lupus nephritis
Background: In lupus nephritis (LN), deposition of pathogenic autoantibodies in the glomeruli is mediated via cross-reactivity with alpha-actinin. Association of serum alpha-actinin antibody (AαA) with LN has been shown in a few studies but the results are controversial. Methods: Eighty patients into entered the study. The diagnosis of SLE was confirmed according to the American College of Rheu...
متن کاملNumerical distribution of lymphoid nodules in the human sigmoid colon, rectosigmoidal junction, rectum, and anal canal.
There is little information on the numerical distribution of lymphoid nodules (LN) in distal segments of the human large bowel. A novel approach was therefore developed to assess the number of LN in the sigmoid colon, the rectosigmoid segment, the rectum, and the anal canal in humans. The distal large bowel from five cadavers was selected for quantitative study. The number of LN was scored macr...
متن کاملIncreasing Dietary Fat Elicits Similar Changes in Fat Oxidation and Markers of Muscle Oxidative Capacity in Lean and Obese Humans
In lean humans, increasing dietary fat intake causes an increase in whole-body fat oxidation and changes in genes that regulate fat oxidation in skeletal muscle, but whether this occurs in obese humans is not known. We compared changes in whole-body fat oxidation and markers of muscle oxidative capacity differ in lean (LN) and obese (OB) adults exposed to a 2-day high-fat (HF) diet. Ten LN (BMI...
متن کاملPrevalence of Lymph Node Metastasis in Radical Prostatectomy; A Retrospective and Multicenter Study in Iran
Lymph node (LN) metastasis is considered an important prognostic factor in patients with prostate cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of LN metastasis among an Iranian population who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) with pelvic LN dissection (PLND). In a retrospective review of medical records, 450 RP cases were included and the data on LN metastasis were extracted from ...
متن کاملRat glomerular mesangial cells require laminin-9 to migrate in response to insulin-like growth factor binding protein-5.
Temporal and spatial differences in extracellular matrix play critical roles in cell proliferation, differentiation and migration. Different migratory stimuli use different substrates and receptors to achieve cell migration. To understand the mechanism of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-5 (IGFBP-5)-induced migration in mesangial cells, the roles of integrins and substrates were exami...
